Closing the AI Governance Gap: Exploring Chief LegalX Panel Insights
Organizations are moving at breakneck speed to adopt AI yet the governance is having to play catch-up. This is often the case in the public sector but we’re seeing this in the private sector as well.
The data on the state of AI governance speaks for itself.
“As data breaches grow costlier, ungoverned AI creates new risks,” wrote Cybersecurity Dive in July, citing data that the vast majority (92%) of organizations that suffered attacks on their AI models failed to properly control access to those tools.
Likewise, the 2026 State of AI Governance Report from Schellman found that while many organizations have built the foundations needed for AI governance, they are still struggling to operationalize policies, as 90% of organizations were found to have allocated funding for AI governance, yet only 27% describe their governance programs as fully mature.
While ungoverned AI is creating new risks, and as organizations are lacking mature governance programs, at the same time, organizations are under continued pressure to keep moving fast with AI adoption.
